    ¡Bienvenido! Welcome back to Learning Spanish With Anime! This series of episodes pick up right where the last ones left off, with Kirito and Eugeo promoted to elite disciples at the academy and training pages of their own, Ronie and Tiese.

    Eugeo's impromptu sparring match against Humbert right at the beginning is what kicks off this series of events. The duel is halted after what would have clearly resulted in a win for Eugeo, which infuriates Humbert to the point of coming up with a very cruel plan to get back at Eugeo. Although Kirito suspects he might be up to something, they have no proof yet, so he encourages his friend to "stay cool" and avoid making any risky moves that might escalate the situation further.  

    When he explains the English expression "Stay cool" to Eugeo, Kirito uses the phrases "No importa lo que pase" ("It doesn't matter what happens") and "La mente fria" (literally, "cold mind") to help illustrate the mindset of keeping your cool. This was an interesting change, even though it's a small one, because the original Japanese version and the English dub both compared it to the phrase "Stay calm" - which would more commonly be said as "Tranquilo" or "Calmate" in Spanish, if they were going for a literal translation. It seems they adapted it to better fit the meaning of "staying cool" in battle.

    Later on, Kirito and Eugeo have a relaxing picnic lunch with their pages, Ronie and Tiese, but the conversation turns serious when the girls inform them that a friend of theirs is being harassed by Humbert, and of course they agree to question him about the matter. This leads to Kirito explaining his personal philosophy, that there are things one has to do ("hay cosas que uno tiene que hacer") even if the law says they shouldn't. His way of thinking is a foreign concept in the Underworld, but also becomes a catalyst for change in his friends.

    Eugeo's voice actor has a great emotional range that really shines in these episodes, particularly when Eugeo lamented his inability to save Alice all those years ago, and when he could barely contain his anger after confronting Raios and Humbert about their actions. On the other hand, Humbert's sarcastic tone of voice actually sounded quite comical during this scene, which created a strange disconnect when my brain processed what he was actually saying after the fact. In this case, I think the more obnoxious sounding version in the English dub worked better, as this was the only scene so far where the tone really felt out of place.

    When Ronie and Tiese are late for their meeting with Kirito and Eugeo, they realize something is wrong. Kirito leaves to look for them, but Eugeo is visited by the girls' friend, Frenica, who tells him what happened. Frenica's VA portrayed her fear very well with a trembling voice as she explained the situation to Eugeo, and he rushes away to save Ronie and Tiese. 

    The revelation that Raios and Humbert have taken the girls prisoner with the intent to harm them in the name of "punishment" for the minor transgression of speaking out against them deeply upsets Eugeo, enough to push him past the limits that prevented him from trying to save Alice when they were children. This scene is always an uncomfortable one to watch, but Eugeo's outrage and determination were very well acted and a standout moment for him.

    I think Kirito and Eugeo's VAs are two of my favorites so far in the Spanish dub. When Kirito arrived to back up his friend and fight Raios, he sounded absolutely fierce, even more so than during his battle with the goblin chief. The voice he spoke in was deeper than its usual tone during these scenes, and he practically growled at Raios when he called him out on his actions, saying he was no different than the monsters in the Dark Territory. 

    (I had to pause the video a few times to make sure I copied down this wonderfully clever insult properly, but it was worth it. Eugeo just called him "maldito bastardo", which means pretty much what it sounds like.)

"Eugeo es mi mejor amigo. Y tú, Raios, eres peor que un goblin de el reino obscuro." ("Eugeo is my best friend. And you, Raios, are worse than a goblin from the dark kingdom.") - Kirito

    As a result of these events, Kirito and Eugeo were detained overnight. Before they were sent to face an Integrity Knight, their teacher healed Eugeo's wound and left her two students with these heartfelt words, "Ahora podrás ir más allá de los límites de tú corazón. Debes tener fe en tu amigo y tu espada." ("Now you will be able to go beyond the limits of your heart. You must have faith in your friend and your sword.")  

    The real shock comes when they see that the Integrity Knight standing before them is none other than Eugeo's childhood friend, Alice, who he has been searching for all these years.

    Unfortunately, Alice has no memory of the past they shared together. She treats Kirito and Eugeo as any other criminal and chains them to her dragon the same as she was when the Integrity Knight took her away from her village as a child. After a quick visit from Ronie and Tiese, who bring their mentors' swords (which are confiscated by Alice) and some snacks (which were thankfully not confiscated), they are taken to Central Cathedral - not as knights the way they had planned, but as prisoners.

    Alice's voice actress does a great job capturing her strength and absolute confidence as a young adult and an Integrity Knight. Likewise, Eugeo's shock and confusion at seeing Alice again only to find that she doesn't remember him was also portrayed very well.

    The story shifts back to the real world for a bit to show what Asuna is up to on the Ocean Turtle. After a startling first encounter, she was introduced to one of Higa's robots, Ichiemon, originally created for the purpose of developing a physical body that could store an artificial fluctlight - bringing them to the real world. This will definitely come into play later, but for now, it's just a nice bit of foreshadowing.

    It was amusing to watch how Higa explained Ichiemon's name to Asuna by saying, "El ichi es uno en japonés." ("Ichi is one in Japanese.") Of course, the funny thing is that in the original story, both characters are speaking Japanese here. When he later mentions a second robot, Niemon, Asuna catches on quickly and replies, "Claro, dos en japonés." ("Of course, two in Japanese.")

    Back in the Underworld, Kirito and Eugeo are currently stuck in a jail cell and plotting their escape. I've always loved this scene because it shows how creative Kirito can be when he realized that the chains that bind them have a high enough priority level to be used as weapons themselves, and therefore breaks out of his prison by using the very object that was supposed to keep him inside. I have to say, Kirito has an impressive track record when it comes to breaking out of virtual prisons. 

    The two of them make it out of the building and find a beautiful flower garden outside, where Kirito offers Eugeo some last minute reassurance before they infiltrate Central Cathedral in order to find Alice. However, they're not out of danger just yet - an Integrity Knight is waiting for them on Alice's orders, and they'll have to get past him if they want to continue their search.

    The dialogue in a few of these scenes, particularly episode 9, seemed faster than usual, so beginners might have trouble keeping up with some of the rapid-fire conversations. However, the majority of scenes most important to the plot should be easy enough to follow with the same level of proficiency required for the previous Underworld episodes.

Spanish dub episodes 5-8

    ¡Bienvenido! Welcome back to Learning Spanish With Anime! The last few episodes of the Alicization arc showed the beginning of Kirito's journey in the Underworld after his real life encounter with Johnny Black wounded him. Now, the series switches back to the real world for a bit of focus on how the characters close to Kirito are responding, and what exactly is going on with his sudden appearance in a virtual world.

    The episode opens with an emotional scene where Asuna meets up with Kirito's family in the hospital and his condition is explained, ultimately resulting in their agreement with Kikuoka to move him into another facility for better care. However, their grief soon turns into full-blown concern when Asuna and Suguha realize that Kirito is not where they said he would be. This begins a search to track him down involving all of his friends, and of course his AI daughter, Yui.

    We get to hear more of the original SAO characters' voices here, after that brief preview during the GGO segment in episode 1. My favorites of the bunch were probably Sinon and Silica. Klein's voice also sounds very natural for him, and gives off the same vibe as the English dub and the original Japanese. Suguha and Liz were played very well too, although there were times when Suguha's voice sounded very similar to Asuna's, which only became obvious during longer scenes that featured the two of them in deep conversation. Yui's voice was absolutely adorable, so this just may be my favorite version of her yet. 

"No puedo esperar. Quiero verlo ya." ("I can't wait. I want to see him now.") - Lightning Flash Asuna infiltrating a military vessel to find the man she loves

    They find out that Kirito has been transported by Kikuoka to a megafloat called The Ocean Turtle, another reference to Alice in Wonderland, where he has been conducting his latest research. Asuna sneaks on board with the help of Dr. Rinko Koujiro, the scientist who assisted in the creation of the medicuboid from season 2 and was also asked to join the project by Kikuoka himself, giving them the opening they needed. Asuna's delivery was great in the scene where she revealed her true identity, especially the force behind her words when she demanded to know, "¿Dónde está Kirito?" ("Where is Kirito?")

    I'm continually impressed by the performances of the Spanish VAs. Kikuoka sounds very similar to his English dub voice (who I will always think of as Captain Levi from Attack on Titan), and even minor character Nurse Aki's voice suits her well. Rinko's VA was also great during the emotional scenes when she later spoke to Asuna about her regrets and her history with Kayaba, the man who created Sword Art Online.

    The conversations in episode 6 involving complex technological concepts might be difficult for beginners to follow, but the scene where Higa speaks with his fluctlight copy and they witness its breakdown was extremely well done, easy to understand and showed great emotion. When he said "Mi nombre es Takeru Higa" ("My name is Takeru Higa"), the tone of his fluctlight copy's response grew noticeably more and more frantic as it insisted "No, es imposible! Yo soy Takeru Higa!" ("No, it's impossible! I'm Takeru Higa!") The original Higa's reply - "Yo soy el auténtico. Tú, no." ("I am the authentic/the real one. You, no.") - sounded almost cold and dismissive as the conversation no doubt weighed on him as well. 

    Another standout moment was the reveal that Kikuoka wants an AI that has the capacity to kill ("una inteligencia artificial capaz de matar"). This line had a clear and chilling delivery, and sets the tone going forward as well as foreshadowing a major event that comes into play later on.

    The next two episodes switch back to the Underworld, where two years have passed under the time-accelerated simulation. After leaving Rulid village with the goal of becoming swordsmen, Kirito and Eugeo are now living in the capital as students at Swordcraft Academy. They've made plenty of friends during this time, like their mentors Liena and Golgorosso, and even some enemies in the nobles Raios and Humbert. 

    Of course, they (mostly Kirito) also got into their fair share of trouble along the way. The branch from the Gigas Cedar tree that Kirito carried with him at the end of episode 4 has finally been transformed into a sword, and he just couldn't resist trying it out on his day of rest - accidentally splashing dirt onto the uniform of Volo, the top ranked student at the academy, in the process and earning himself a duel to settle the score. 

    One of the things that really stood out to me as I was watching is just how much this duel between Kirito and Volo laid the groundwork for Kirito's battles later on, particularly in its explanation of Incarnation and foreshadowing the abilities of his new sword. Maybe it's because I had to really focus on the meaning of the words this time around, but I actually felt like I picked up on a few things watching this scene in Spanish that I missed during my initial viewing in English. 

    It also seemed to me that Kirito and Eugeo's voices are just a bit deeper after the two year timeskip, which is a nice touch that shows they're getting older. Liena's voice carries a strength and confidence that suits her well. Even the VAs playing Raios and Humbert did a good job of portraying pompous nobles while managing to sound slightly less obnoxious than their English counterparts.  

"Nos complementamos muy bien." ("We complement each other very well.") - Kirito reassures Eugeo that they will stay on this journey together even if he regains his memories 

    The banter between Kirito and Eugeo is great, and really gives the impression that they've become close friends during the two years they spent together. I laughed when Eugeo says they're late for dinner and Kirito replied with "Sí, mama." Right before Kirito's duel with Volo, Eugeo asks him "¿Ahora que fue lo hiciste?" ("Now what did you do?"), to which Kirito confidently answers "Sabes cómo soy" ("You know how I am"), portraying their personality quirks so well in both voice acting and the dialogue translation. 

    Kirito's voice actor also captured his loneliness exceptionally well during the scene in the garden. Kirito sounded very emotional, holding back sobs, when he found the flowers he had been growing as a graduation gift for his mentor were destroyed. His explaination of how he related to the flowers planted in foreign soil - "Yo también estoy tratando vivir en una tierra extraña" ("I too am trying to live in a strange land") - was very heartfelt. The mysterious voice which offers Kirito the encouragement he needs to revive the flowers, which we will later find belongs to a character named Charlotte, was also well played and unexpectedly regal.

"Sientelas. Escuchalas." ("Feel them. Listen to them.")

    After Kirito's duel with Volo, he and Eugeo begin their next year of school and both are promoted to the role of elite disciples - which makes them mentors themselves. The voice actresses playing their pages, Ronie and Tiese, were great in their roles, both in portraying their slightly timid and overly formal report upon the completion of their work, as well as their excited chatter after leaving the room with the bag full of fresh honey pies that Kirito gave them. It was nice to watch these innocent, playful scenes again before the story takes a more serious turn in the coming episodes. 

    These four episodes, especially #6 & 8, explain a great deal about the Underworld, and if your Spanish is not quite at the level to follow all of this rapid-fire dialogue, you might end up missing some key points. The influence of imagination on the Underworld, referred to as "Incarnation" by its inhabitants, is shown both in the garden and during Kirito's battle with Volo. This scene is also the first to hint at the special abilities of Kirito's sword. The real world scenes also discuss the nature of the fluctlight and the reason why Rath created the Underworld. For anyone still learning the language, I highly suggest watching these scenes more than once.

Spanish dub episodes 2-4 review

    ¡Bienvenido! Welcome back to Learning Spanish With Anime, and Happy SAO Day! According to the story's timeline, this is the day when 10,000 players logged into Aincrad and discovered they couldn't log back out until beating the game. I had originally planned to post this episode review towards the end of last week, but there's a special kind of irony in spending the weekend leading up to SAO day without an internet connection (or electricity).  

    Following my review of the first episode of Sword Art Online: Alicization covered in my previous blog entry, these episodes dive right back into the Underworld, where Kirito ultimately ended up after his fateful showdown with Johnny Black.

    Thrown back into the Underworld after his near brush with death, Kirito spends the first part of the episode trying to discern where he is now, wondering if this new world he finds himself in is a game ("juego") or a dream ("sueño"). These scenes were easy to understand and a joy to rewatch in the Spanish dub, with Kirito contemplating what exactly happened and, once he accepts that this is in fact a virtual world, how to log out while examining his new surroundings. 

    As Kirito follows the nostalgic sound of an axe slamming against the massive Gigas Cedar tree and meets Eugeo again, six years older than the last time we saw him in the opening episode, we hear the voice of Kirito's new friend and partner on this long journey. Fans of the English dub will be pleased to know that Eugeo's voice as a teen in the Spanish dub perfectly captured his soft, gentle tone and sounded so similar at times that it was almost like listening to the same person just speaking a different language. 

Kirito just discovered the Underworld equivalent of the black bread from Aincrad's first floor

    Due to the nature of the experiment, Kirito doesn't remember his previous time-accelerated dive into the Underworld, so everything is new to him. Luckily, he has Eugeo to bring him up to speed. Kirito's apparent memory loss shares enough in common with the stories of a naturally occurring phenomenon in their world - for this reason, Eugeo believes he is "un niño perdido de Vector", or "a lost child of Vector", someone who suddenly appeared in another place with no memory of how they got there or where they came from. This is convenient for Kirito, but one has to wonder what Rath (the organization which created the Underworld) is up to if this is a fairly common or at least well-known thing. The name "Vector" itself will come up again in later episodes in a big way, shedding some light on the truth behind the myth created by the Underworld residents. (It's notable that the Spanish dub seems to use the name "Vector" here, from the light novel translation, rather than "Vecta" in the spoken Japanese and English dubs.)

    Kirito also learns about some of the more game-like features of this world, such as the Stacia window - literally called "la ventana de Stacia" in the Spanish dub - which displays the status of an item or person, and receives a bit of a crash course on the laws of the land. After Eugeo's day of work at the tree is complete, he kindly brings Kirito back to his village.

    One of the things I've noticed about this dub of Alicization (and War of Underworld as well) is that the easiest scenes for me to understand as someone still learning Spanish all take place in Rulid village. This is perhaps because the dialogue is more focused on the day to day activities of the characters, using familiar vocabulary and a relaxed pace. I've always liked Rulid village for its beautiful design, peaceful background music, and the people who live there. This gives me yet another reason to enjoy revisiting these scenes. 

    During Kirito's time in the village, he learns about Alice, whose name still fills him with a painful sense of nostalgia despite his blocked memories, and the journey Eugeo took with her to the cave. The quiet determination mixed with a sense of deep remorse is clear in Eugeo's voice here when he expressed his wish to rescue Alice but laments that he is tied to his seemingly impossible calling. Thanks to his perceived status as a lost child of Vector, Kirito is allowed to stay at the town church, which is also an orphanage. This is where he meets Alice's sister, Selka. 

    Selka's voice actress portrayed her emotions so well in these scenes, from her quiet sadness when she spoke about the effect losing her sister had on everyone, about how Eugeo was always happy but now he was different ("Eugeo siempre estaba feliz, pero ahora es diferente"), and the desperation she expressed to Kirito when she said "Pero no es mi culpa que no está aquí" ("But it's not my fault she's not here"). The part where she gets flustered by Kirito's observant remark, "Tú lo quieres mucho, verdad?" ("You like him a lot, right?") was adorably well played as she insisted, "Sí, pero solo cómo amigo." ("Yes, but only as a friend.")

    Right before she leaves the room, Selka asks Kirito if Eugeo told him about what happened with her sister, Alice, all those years ago when she was taken away by an Integrity Knight. Kirito's honest reply was clearly a catalyst for change in Selka, in the same way his playful encouragement had been for her sister in the past, and sets them on a path that will change all of their lives forever. The next morning, Selka is missing, and Eugeo is certain she went to retrace Alice's steps into the cave they visited as children.

    When they find Selka, she's been captured by goblins and it's up to them to save her. It's been a while since I watched these beginning episodes where Kirito fought the goblins, and I had forgotten what an awesome battle this was. During this scene, Kirito's tone of voice became deeper and more serious, like a warrior preparing to fight, which I thought was a nice touch. His threat to the goblin horde while holding up the head of their leader was executed perfectly.  

    Eugeo's voice actor also did well in this scene, from the timid tremble in his words at the beginning to his absolute desperation towards the end of the battle when he declared, "Esta vez lo protegeré!" ("This time I will protect him!") His brave stand gives Kirito the chance he needs to take down the goblin chief, but Eugeo was badly wounded. As Selka and Kirito rush to save him, Kirito hears the voice of Alice calling him to the Central Cathedral at the capital of the Human Empire. The tone of little Alice in this scene is somewhat ominous, and so different from her cheerful, carefree voice in the premiere episode that it sounds almost like a different person.

    The battle against the goblins was a major turning point for Kirito and Eugeo. With their stats boosted from life-or-death combat experience, Eugeo can now easily wield the Blue Rose Sword, which he previously spent three months just dragging it from the cave back towards the village, and quickly finished cutting down the tree that he believed would never fall in his lifetime. It was a turning point for Selka too, who admits to Kirito with remorse that she can't be like her sister ("No puedo ser comó mi hermana"), and then receives his encouragement that there are things only she can do.

    As the town celebrates, Eugeo declares in front of everyone that he has decided to become a swordsman with the same determination in his voice that he showed when he protected Kirito in the cave. The next day, they begin their journey to the capital to find Alice.
